Welcome to Tokushinkai Karate Club, a Shotokan Karate club based at Woolstones Community Centre in Milton Keynes.

Under the technical direction of head instructor Sensei Chris Gillies (5th Dan), classes are taught by Sensei Ryan Gillies (1st Dan) and follow the guidance and philosophy of the late, world renowned Japanese Karate Master, Hirokazu Kanazawa Soke (10th Dan) – the only dojo in Milton Keynes to do so. We are a a member of SKKIF and have a history spanning 25 years, beginning in Olney in 1991, relocating to the Open University in 2011 and now in Woolstones close to the heart of the city.

The name Tokushinkai was gifted to the dojo by Kanazawa Soke himself. 徳 (Toku), 心 (Shin), and 会 (Kai) translates loosely as School of Virtuous Heart – an ideal by which all those at the club strive to live by.

We welcome students of all ages and abilities from all walks of life, and encourage you to come along and find out for yourself just how rewarding Karate can be. For us Karate is not a sport, it is a way of life that embodies the teachings, guidance and philosophy of one the greatest Karate masters to have ever lived.

Training at Tokushinkai offers a solid grounding in Kanazawa-Ryu; traditional Shotokan karate in the Japanese style, covering all aspects including Kihon (basic techniques), Kumite (sparring/pairwork) and Kata (complex patterns of movements), utilising a teaching structure that aims to bring out the best in Karate students of all ages and abilities.

Shotokan Karate has been proven to improve and maintain fitness, flexibility, speed, strength, self-awareness and discipline.

SKKIF licence holders have the opportunity to undertake grading examinations at Tokushinkai, and can have the benefit of access to all SKKIF Club/National/International courses and competitions. Members also have access annually to visiting instructors to the UK from SKIF (Headquarters) Honbu Dojo Tokyo, Japan.

Sensei Chris Gillies is a registered SKKIF grading examiner with experience training at the Honbu Dojo as well as both National and World Championship Karate competitions.
